So now it’s over to you –

What Scots words do you use or have you heard people using? What part of the country do they say it in? Can you think of a sentence or two showing how it might be used or an idea of how it is pronounced in that area?

Can you give any more examples of place-names which contain the words in our Glossary of Scots Place-name Elements (in the Database section of the website)? Do you have a photograph of the place that you can upload for everyone to see? Do you know how the name is pronounced in the local area?

Can you give us any more examples of place-names which contain these words? Please let us know, and even upload a picture if you have one.
It's no Jeddart, as yer man said oan the wireless, it's Jethart. But it's maistly onlie folk that come frae the pliss that can actually say Jethart.
Broxburn, West Lothian. Apparently Brox is derived from Badger so Broxburn = Badger's Brook

Also Whitburn, West Lothian.

Interesting. Is it Jethart with the 'th' pronounced as in 'the' or 'thin'? I'll tell Bruce (the man on the radio).

I see that one recorded spelling, c. 1500, is Jedward. I wonder if they know.

The OS has an entire section
http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/freefun/didyouknow/placenames/scotsglossary-a-d.html

Some had also been corrupted through time and now lost. Either cartographers trying to spell them using English rules and losing what they are, or just Anglicising them outright (things documented as heid now head, gate becoming road or whatever).

I believe the north islands, like Shetland, are much more different than what they should be. Their parts aren't likely on the OS, though there are books on their place names. Some words likely survive in their dialect.
Shetland place-names are fascinating -- much more heavily influenced by Norse than most of mainland Scotland. The "Links" section of the website has a link to Shetland ForWirds, a group dedicated to promoting and celebrating Shetland's dialect.

The OS website is a great resource, and we'll be adding it to our "Links" section. It only includes one or two examples of most elements, though, and we're keen to get lots, from all over Scotland! So do please keep sending them in, and we'll gradually be able to build up a much fuller picture of where and how these terms are used.

In Berwickshire the village of Auchencrow is known as Eddncraw and the coastal village of Coldingham is known as Cowdenyam. The fishing port of Eyemouth is Himooth and Duns is Dunce. Hawick is Hoick and Galashiels is Gawlie
